‘But somehow, something in all this makes me remember exactly what it is to be a New Zealander. I had no idea how much love I really had for the land around me until I saw it broken … we will start again somewhere — and it will be in New Zealand, the land that has sheltered and protected us more than it has ever hurt us.’

Chris Henry will be flying here and there, fixing broken bones and tending to other injuries, for days yet, while his family are patching up what they can of their home. When I speak with him a few days later by phone in Oaro, where he’s holding a medical clinic, he tells me the whole family has a deep connection and grounding to their Clarence home, so it’s no surprise his daughter speaks of it so profoundly. His sons, though, are responding differently. ‘I was laughing about boy brains and girl brains,’ he says. ‘She’s written this incredibly emotional stuff and the boys are thinking, “When can we get the surfboards out?”’
